Student Experience Levels
I teach primarily beginners and intermediate students.
Ages
I teach adults as well as children, albeit those under age 10 in many cases lack the necessary finger dexterity and strength, but there are exceptions.
Styles
A fully developed bassist should be able to play any style as needed. Granted, for beginners, motivation is a key aspect, thus apart from technical aspects, I do try to match the style of music to the students interest.
Notation vs Tab vs By Ear
All 3 can be very useful, albeit I am a firm believer that tablature while a nice short cut to appear somewhat proficient, in the long term can be counter productive. Thus, I do not teach tablature. I also believe playing by ear is an incredibly useful skill, in many cases, it too can be counterproductive when it comes to furthering ones musical career. I do teach playing by ear, but it is only introduced after some level of proficiency is gained with notation, subject of course to whether a student wishes to learn it or not.
In home service
I only teach in students homes, there are many barriers to learning an instrument, and getting a ride to a lesson should not be one of them. Also, it will save you time, but alas there is a tradeoff involved, as it is more expensive than lessons in a music studio. I cover a different geographic area each day, within a radius of 25 miles of St Charles, MN. Communities served include Lewiston, St Charles, Dover, Eyota, Chatfield, Fountain, Preston, Lanesboro, Rushford, Altura, Plainview, and Elgin.
